With the July moving period approaching, June is a good time to settle the details that can turn a simple move into an expensive scramble. A booked truck is only one part of the plan. Access, insurance, utilities and a documented handover deserve their own checklist.

For a rental, confirm the agreed access arrangements with the landlord. For a purchase, distinguish the notarial signing from the contractual occupancy date. Do not book an irreversible delivery based only on an informal conversation. In a condo building, check elevator reservations, moving hours and building procedures early.

Arrange insurance and service transfers for the relevant dates. Keep the necessary account information, essential documents, medication and basic supplies with you rather than in the moving truck. Measure large furniture and check doorways, staircases and elevator access before moving day.

Photograph the property’s condition, record any concerns and confirm how they will be communicated. List the keys, access cards, garage remotes and other items being handed over. Where appropriate, retain meter readings and copies of written arrangements.

The TAL explains tenants’ obligations concerning cleanliness, prudent use and returning the dwelling, with allowance for normal wear. Its guidance is a useful reference if there is disagreement about condition. A dated record is more useful than an argument based on memory; it does not replace the lease or applicable law.

What happens if the truck arrives late, a service connection is delayed or a large item will not fit? Set aside some time and funds for manageable surprises. Owners should also keep appliance manuals, warranties and information about recent work available for the handover.
